Understanding Trauma
Trauma isn’t always a single dramatic event. It can be accumulated stress, childhood experiences, relationship patterns, workplace bullying, or situations where you felt unsafe, unheard, or out of control.
Your nervous system stores these experiences as protective predictions. Long after the event has passed, your body continues responding as though the threat is still present – triggering anxiety, hypervigilance, avoidance, emotional reactivity, and physical tension.
Understanding PTSD
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder occurs when the nervous system remains stuck in a trauma response long after the traumatic event has ended. Symptoms can include:
- Flashbacks or intrusive memories
- Nightmares and disturbed sleep
- Hypervigilance and an exaggerated startle response
- Emotional numbness or detachment
- Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability or anger
- Physical symptoms such as chronic tension, headaches, or digestive issues
How I Help
Clinical hypnotherapy offers a gentle, non-confrontational approach to trauma recovery and PTSD. Unlike some forms of talk therapy, we don’t need to relive traumatic events in detail. Instead, we work at the subconscious level to update the nervous system’s response.
Release Stored Tension
Allow your body to let go of the physical patterns held from past experiences – the chronic tension, the clenched jaw, the shallow breathing.
Update Protective Responses
Retrain your nervous system to respond to the present, not the past. Your body learns that the threat has ended and it's safe to settle.
Reduce Flashbacks & Intrusive Memories
Decrease the intensity and frequency of traumatic memories by processing them at the subconscious level.
Rebuild Safety & Self-Trust
Restore your sense of internal safety and confidence in your own resilience. Reconnect with a sense of calm and groundedness.
Break Reactive Patterns
Interrupt the automatic behaviours and emotional responses that trauma installed – the flinching, the shutting down, the anger, the avoidance.
Restore Sleep
Address the nightmares, hypervigilance, and inability to relax that prevent restful sleep after trauma.
- Single-event trauma (accidents, assault, medical trauma)
- Complex trauma (ongoing abuse, neglect, unsafe environments)
- Childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
- Workplace trauma and bullying
- Relationship trauma
- Medical trauma and health-related PTSD
- First responder and vicarious trauma
- Birth trauma
- Grief-related trauma
Through The Intelligent Body Framework, I work with your body’s predictive systems in a safe, calm environment. Sessions are paced to your comfort – there is no pressure to disclose more than you’re ready to share.
The framework recognises that trauma is held in the body, not just the mind. By working with both the subconscious patterns and the nervous system’s somatic responses, we create change at the level where trauma is actually stored.
Many clients describe the experience as deeply restorative.
Important Note
If you are currently in crisis or experiencing acute psychological distress, please contact your GP, a psychologist, or Lifeline (13 11 14) for immediate support.
Clinical hypnotherapy for trauma and PTSD is most effective when the person is in a stable enough state to engage in therapeutic work. I’m happy to discuss suitability during a free consultation.
Hypnotherapy for trauma complements other therapeutic approaches. It does not replace psychological or psychiatric care where needed.
